Although I'm new here myself (first post), I think I can safely refer you
to "Losing Your Grip - a Journey in Five Fits" (I can't remember the
author).
This is one of the few pieces of interactive fiction I've experienced
worthy of the title, and the one which inspired me to write my own.
Admitedly, it is occasionally a bit overly pretentious, and some of the
puzzles are a bit hard (unless I'm just thick), and it's probably not really
suitable for a beginner, but if you have only played the Beeb's rather
poor selection of adventure games then you're in for a treat.
It's available from the IF-archive at ftp.gmd.de under the tads section
of the games directory, filename "grip.gam".
As it is a TADS game, you will also need the TADS run-time engine,
available from the same site.
By the way, your posting was techniquely off-topic - rec.arts.int-fiction is
for those writing interactive-fiction, and rec.games.int-fiction is for
stuff
about playing them.
