Overview and Introduction
In 1998, Rice University was awarded a three year grant from the National Science Foundation to increase representation of females in science, engineering, and mathematics professions through Equity Initiatives for Science and Mathematics. A major component of Equity Initiatives targets elementary science and mathematics instruction. The principle investigator for this grant is Dr. Frederick B. Rudolph, Chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology and Executive Director of the Institute of Biosciences and Bioengineering. The Science and Mathematics Institute is a professional development program that explores the interdisciplinary issues of measurement, estimation, and judgment of reasonableness while carrying out authentic scientific and mathematical investigations. The program focuses on hands-on laboratory and field studies, as well as the use of research-based teacher strategies to improve student learning. The three primary goals of the summer training are to: 1. increase knowledge of measurement concepts and skills, The main goal for the academic year follow-up is to develop
a collaborative learning community to foster professional growth among
the participants throughout the school year. Further, it is expected
that SMI Teachers will use what they have learned as they teach math
and science at their home campuses and that they will share their new
knowledge with their colleagues as appropriate. Participation in the
full year of activities is required. |
